Ao An, 79, is facing charges of extermination,persecution on political and religious grounds and other inhumane actsat detention centers under the late Pol Pot regime.

The UnitedNations-backed ECCC was established in 2006 with the intent to seek anddeliver justice for victims of the genocidal Khmer Rouge regime whichclaimed the lives of nearly 2 million innocent Cambodians from1975-1979.

In 2010, the tribunal sentenced ex-chief of TuolSleng prison Kaing Guek Eav, known as Duch, to life in prison for warcrimes against humanity.

In early August of last year, twoex-leaders of the Pol Pot regime Nuon Chea and Khieu Samphan alsoreceived life sentences for the same crime. The two have appealed thesentence.

They are now being tried the second time, this timeon the charges of killing of ethnic Vietnamese and Muslim Chamminorities, forced marriage and rape.-VNA
