Appeal court on embezzlement, money laundering at Vinashinlines

Hanoi (VNA) – The High-Level People’sCourt in Hanoi on August 17 began to hear the appeals of four defendants in amajor corruption case at the Vinashin Ocean Shipping Company Ltd(Vinashinlines).
Tran Van Liem (former general director ofVinashinlines), Giang Kim Dat (former acting head of Vinashinlines’ salesdepartment), and Tran Van Khuong (Vinashinlines’ ex-chief accountant), arepresent at the three-day court, while Giang Van Hien (Dat’s father) asked to beabsent due to health reasons.
🐬The Hanoi People’s Court earlier held that thereare sufficient grounds to confirm that during the process of purchasing andleasing ships from 2006 to 2008, Liem, Dat and Khuong had abused their positionand power and appropriated more than 260 billion VND (11.4 million USD) ofVinashinlines.
Liem stole 3.1billion VND (138,000 USD), while Dat embezzled around 255 billion VND (11.34million USD) and Khuong 110,000 USD.
Liem was pinpointed as the ringleader in thecase, while Dat was a proactive accomplice and Khuong was an accomplice.
