April 30 victory - symbol of national solidarity: Argentine journalist

The victory of April 30, 1975, stands as a symbol of national solidarity in the heroic struggle of the Vietnamese people to defend their independence, freedom, and sovereignty, said Argentine journalist Gaston Fiorda.

Hanoi (VNA) - The victory of April 30, 1975, stands as a symbol of national solidarity in the heroic struggle of the Vietnamese people to defend their independence, freedom, and sovereignty, said Argentine journalist Gaston Fiorda.

In an interview with Vietnam News Agency (VNA) corresponden in Buenos Aires on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification (April 30, 1975-2025), Fiorda, currently working with Argentina’s National Radio, emphasised that the April 30 victory was not only of profound importance to the Vietnamese people but also served as a powerful source of inspiration for many social movements in Latin America at the time in their struggle against military dictatorships.

Fifty years on, the message of that historic victory carries new meaning - from the ruins and pain of war, Vietnam has emerged as one of the world’s fastest-growing economies, with remarkable socio-economic achievements.

The journalist highlighted the outcomes of the Doi Moi (Renewal) process, initiated following the 6th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam in late 1986. He noted that the country’s social welfare and quality of life have steadily improved, and Vietnam has become a model of development in Southeast Asia.

Commenting on Vietnam’s growing international integration, Fiorda pointed to the recent signing of 45 cooperation agreements with China as evidence of Vietnam’s swift and strategic economic transformation amid a world full of challenges and changes.

Reflecting on the spirit of solidarity between the Argentine and Vietnamese peoples during the years of intense conflict, Fiorda, who is also a historian with extensive research on Vietnam, recalled that in the 1960s and 1970s, Argentines followed daily news from Vietnam. Archival materials from the time recorded widespread expressions of solidarity through anti-war activities, especially on university campuses.

At the societal level, various groups and movements in Argentina mobilised resources to provide medical supplies to Vietnam and voiced support at international forums, calling for peace, self-determination, and respect for Vietnam’s independence. It was in this context that in 1973, even before the war had ended, the Government of President Juan Domingo Perón established diplomatic relations with Vietnam, an act that reflected Argentina’s deep-rooted support and solidarity.

🅷 Fiorda quoted words of Argentina’s legendary revolutionary leader Ernesto Che Guevara as he declared in April 1966 that the Vietnamese people are truly resilient and courageous! Let’s create two, three… many Vietnam. His words remain one of the clearest testaments to the enduring solidarity and bond between the people of Argentina and Vietnam, according to Florida./.
