Hanoi (VNA)𒁃 – After a 4-1 win over Laos in their opening match at the 2024 ASEAN Cup on December 9, Vietnam's national football team gained 1.3 points in the FIFA ranking.

According to Football Ranking, this is lower than the 1.8 points earned by Indonesia for their 1-0 victory over Myanmar in the first round. The difference is due to Laos' lower FIFA ranking compared to other teams. Football Ranking also projects that Vietnam's win over Laos will lift the team one spot to 115th in the FIFA rankings. Indonesia also moves up one spot to 124th, while Myanmar drops to 168th, and Laos remains at 186th.
Vietnam will have another opportunity to gain FIFA points in their match against Indonesia on December 15. A win would earn Vietnam 2.38 points, while a penalty shootout victory would net 1.13 points. A loss would result in a 2.62-point deduction, and a draw or penalty shootout loss would lead to a 0.12-point drop.
Earlier, Thailand defeated Timor-Leste 10-0 but earned only 0.95 points due to Timor-Leste’s low FIFA ranking. Thailand’s upcoming match against Malaysia on December 14 offers more opportunities. A win would earn them 1.97 points, and a penalty shootout win would give them 0.72 points. However, a draw or penalty shootout loss would deduct 0.53 points, and a loss would cost Thailand 3.03 points./.
