ASEAN promotes gender equality, women protection

Jakarta (VNA) – HeForShe campaign, designed to encourage men andboys to eliminate discrimination against women and girls, was launched by theAssociation of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on November 30 in response toInternational Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women (November 25).

In his remark, ASEAN Secretary General Le Luong Minh laid stress on the group’scommitment to eliminating discrimination against women.

Everyone has the responsibility to popularise a culture that all men and boysrespect women and girls, which is necessary to promote rights of women andgirls in the bloc, he stressed, adding that this is a crucial step to build acomprehensive ASEAN community in the coming years.

Although ASEAN member states have gained achievements in gender equality, thereshould be more actions to ensure that women have equal rights with men, Minh said.He stated that HeForShe campaign affirms ASEAN’s efforts in protecting womenand girls.

Rapid economic development in many Asian countries, including Vietnam, hasresulted in advancement in gender equality and human right promotion, PhD MiwaKato, UN Women Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific, told Vietnam NewsAgency correspondents.

She believed that women and girls are having more chances to show off theircapacity and promotion opportunities.

HeForShe, initiated by the UN Women, is a global campaign for gender equalitythat encourages men and boys to take actions against gender inequality.-VNA
