ASEAN-US science prize for women launched

The 8th Underwriters Laboratories-ASEAN-US Science Prize for Women 2022 began calling for applications on January 10.

Jakarta (VNA) - The 8th UnderwritersLaboratories-ASEAN-US Science Prize for Women 2022 began calling forapplications on January 10.

The launch was co-organised by the ASEAN Committee on Science,Technology and Innovation (COSTI), together with the US Government, through theUS Agency for International Development (USAID) and Underwriters Laboratories.

This year’s competition aims to raise awareness of cutting-edge advancements by women in Artificial Intelligence (AI) research to addresspressing issues in ASEAN communities. Candidates working in Science,Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) fields will compete in twocategories – the mid-career scientist category for scientists aged 45 years andbelow, and the senior scientist category for those aged 46 and older, over thenext several months.

The 2022 theme is AI in Health and Safety, chosen for itsimportance in delivering better and more affordable health care services to over660 million inhabitants in ASEAN.

Applicants must be ASEAN citizens and hold a doctoraldegree. The deadline for applications is March 18, 2022.

Underwriters Laboratories, a non-profit organisationdedicated to the discovery and application of scientific knowledge, will award 12,500USD to each of the winners in both categories and 5,000 USD to the runner-upfinalists.

Rachel Cooke, Chargé d’Affaires, a.i. of the US Mission toASEAN said via USAID’s continued support for the annual competition, the USreaffirms its commitment to closing gender gaps so that more women can help shapeadvancements in STEM fields.

Chair of the ASEAN COSTI 2022 and Deputy Minister of Scienceand Technology of Vietnam Bui The Duy said that research and work in AI by regionalfemale scientists will not only benefit the local communities but also enablereplication that will improve millions of lives in the region.

The Science Prize for Women was first held in 2014. /.
