ASEAN+3 Summit highlights economic cooperation

The ASEAN 3 Summit took place in Manila, the Philippines, on November 14 with the attendance of leaders from 10 ASEAN member states and Japan, China and the Republic of Korea.

Manila (VNA) – TheASEAN 3 Summit took place in Manila, the Philippines, on November 14 with theattendance of leaders from 10 ASEAN member states and Japan, China and theRepublic of Korea. 

The event was held within theframework of the 31st ASEAN Summit and related meetings.

In his speech, PhilippinePresident Rodrigo Duterte called on participating leaders to continue nurturingpeaceful co-existence, especially within the ASEAN 3.

Japanese Prime Minister ShinzoAbe affirmed the significance of the ASEAN 3 financial cooperation amid concernover protectionism, saying that it will promote regional and global economicdevelopment as well as strengthen trade liberalisation.

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang proposedadvancing the establishment of an East Asia Economic Community so as to promoteregional integration and common development.

Meanwhile, President of theRepublic of Korea Moon Jae-in called for continued efforts in the fight againstclimate change and aging population.

The leaders also discussed theRegional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) agreement which is undernegotiations with Australia, India and New Zealand. However, details of thediscussions are yet to be announced.-VNA
