At least 10 killed, 390,000 displaced as Typhoon Goni hits Philippines

At least 10 people were killed and three others went missing in the Philippines when Typhoon Goni, the strongest storm so far this year, hit Luzon island’s southern part on November 1, according to the country’s Office of Civil Defence (OCD).

Hanoi (VNA) – At least 10 people were killed and three others wentmissing in the Philippines when Typhoon Goni, the strongest storm so far thisyear, hit Luzon island’s southern part on November 1, according to thecountry’s  Office of Civil Defence (OCD).

An OCD report said that at least nine died in Albay provinceand one in Catanduanes island province, while three other people in Guinobatantown in Albay province were reported missing.

Typhoon Goni has also forced the displacement of over390,000 people, of whom more than 345,000 are staying in the government’sevacuation centres.

Typhoons and tropical storms regularly hit the Philippinesfrom June through December, claiming hundreds of lives and cause billions ofdollars in damage.

Located in the “Pacific Ring of Fire,” the Philippines isamong the most disaster-prone countries in the world, including activevolcanoes, frequent earthquakes, and an average of 20 typhoons a year causingfloods and landslides./.
