British Embassy helps set up billboards to raise awareness about human trafficking

A billboard was installed in Cua Lo town in the north-central province of Nghe An on May 22 promoting the round-the-clock free services available on the “111” hotline for victims of human trafficking to seek help and raising public awareness about the social evil.

Nghe An (VNA) - A billboard was installed in Cua Lo town in the north-centralprovince of Nghe An on May 22 promoting the round-the-clock free services available on the“111” hotline for victims of human trafficking to seek help and raising publicawareness about the social evil.

Thebillboard was launched at a ceremony co-held by the UK Embassy in Vietnam, theMinistry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs’ Department of Children, andlocal authorities.

It forms partof an awareness campaign that conveys a message of “Don’t gamble with yourfuture - Illegal immigration can make you a victim of human trafficking”,encouraging people to carefully examine their options when considering migration.They are also advised to be fully aware of the risks involved and consider whatlegal possibilities there may be, not only to guarantee their own safety butalso the future of their families.

Thegovernments of the UK and Vietnam are closely coordinating in combating humantrafficking by reaching out to vulnerable people to raise awareness about thedangers, said Deputy Head of Mission at the UK Embassy Stephen Lysaght. Beaware of the risks and don’t be a victim, he urged.

Supportingthe campaign, Miss Universe Vietnam 2017 H’hen Nie said people from ethnicminority groups, particularly young girls, are vulnerable to human trafficking.She hopes that people will become equipped with knowledge to prevent themselvesor their loved ones from falling into the clutches of human traffickers.

Thecampaign, which began in March, includes setting up billboards promoting the “111”hotline on main streets in seven districts of the province - Dien Chau, YenThanh, Nghi Loc, Hung Nguyen, Cua Lo, Tuong Duong, and Con Cuong between Marchand June.

Similar billboardswill also be set up at five international airports in Vietnam - Noi Bai, TanSon Nhat, Da Nang, Vinh, and Dong Hoi - while a campaign video featuring BritishAmbassador in Vietnam Gareth Ward and H’hen Nie will be broadcast on VTV inJuly./.
