Can Tho (VNA)⭕ - Leading scientists from the US and countries in the Mekong River basin met at a workshop in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho on November 30 to discuss measures to quicken the building of a Mekong Delta Museum of Natural History.

Participants agreed on the need to carry out the project, saying it will help promote scientific research and data collection in ecology, water, food and energy, which will be useful for designing development models in the Mekong River basin. Associate Professor Ha Thanh Toan, President of Can Tho University and the project’s initiator, underlined the need to connect scientists in the region and carry out communication campaigns to raise public awareness in the field.
With high-quality lecturers and students, the university will cooperate with Vietnamese organisations and scientists from other countries to implement the project, he said. Once completed, the project will play an important role in developing science, tourism, education and economy in the Mekong River basin, he added. During the two-day workshop, attendees analysed and gave opinions on the plan to build the museum, which will involve many universities from around the world.
The museum will have four main areas, with three for storing data, specimens, books, documents, movies and web pages, and one for display. Among them, data, specimens, and related documents are for academic purposes while the display area is for public education and tourism. Works related to master plans and personnel for the project were completed, while those to form research groups are progressing.-VNA
