Hanoi (VNA) - The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) will cooperatewith the police to conduct legal proceedings and impose heavyfines against those who sell, exchange and use personal information offlight passengers.
CAAV will also supervisethe security of flight passengers’ personal information on all domesticairlines this month.
The statement was madeafter passengers complained about being annoyed by taxi service operators,who kept calling to offer their services soon after passengers disembarked fromthe plane.
They claimed that theirpersonal information was likely to have been leaked.
Currently, personalinformation of passengers, including name, gender, flight schedules and mobilenumbers, is given to airlines and flight ticket agencies. The information isnecessary for airlines and ticket agencies to inform passengers in case ofchanges in flight schedules and other flight safety issues.
The airlines conductedinspections and determined that the information was leaked by some employees ofthe airlines and flight ticket agencies, who supplied passengers’ informationto taxi firms and hotels.
These employees weredismissed and the airlines ended their contracts with ticket agencies floutingrules.
A representative of CAAVsaid the leak of customers’ information has been taking place since 2013 whenpassengers reported receiving offers of taxi services on their mobile phones atHanoi’s Noi Bai International Airport and central Khenh Hoa province’s Cam RanhInternational Airport.
This violation is againstthe regulation on keeping passengers’ information secure, annoyed passengersand affected the service quality of airlines, he said.
CAAV has sent documentsrequiring airlines to revise the process of entering, storing and securingpersonal information of passengers and provide information on the unit thatcould access such information and the security procedures of each airline. Theresults must be reported to CAAV soon.
CAAV has also encouragedcustomers to inform the authority via hotlines in case they receive phone callsoffering taxi services.-VNA
Airports across the country served 55.41 million passengers in the period from January to July, according to the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV).
