Cambodia: Trial against Khmer Rouge ex-leaders continues

The Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) on July 27 opened hearings to hear the testimony of witnesses within the framework of appeals for two former leaders of the Khmer Rouge regime, Nuon Chea and Khieu Samphan, on July 27.

Accordingto ECCC Spokesman Neth Pheaktra, the court would convene and hear fromwitnesses focusing on crimes committed at a dam construction in Srokdistrict in Banteay Meanchey province.

An estimated 15,000 to20,000 people were forced to work at the dam’s construction from 1978 to1979. Many of them died of diseases or exhaustion or were executed inthe period.

The ECCC is expected to make appeal judgements in the first quarter of 2016.

In early August of last year, the two ex-leaders were given life sentences for crimes against humanity.-VNA

Thai Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce Vuttikrai Leewiraphan Thailand's formal proposal will be substantial enough for the US to consider further detailed negotiations.
