Cambodia: UXO accidents decrease sharply

As many as 39 accidents caused by unexploded ordnance (UXO) left by the war were recorded in Cambodia in the first three months of this year, down 35 percent against the same period last year, according to the Cambodian Mine Action Authority (CMAA).

CMAC said in itsreport released on June 11 that UXOs left five dead and 34 wounded inthe reviewed period, a decrease of 40 percent compared to the sameperiod of 2014.

It is estimated that about 4-6 million unexplodedmines, bombs and other munitions remained in the country after threedecades of war.

The Cambodian government set a target to clearall UXOs by 2020. The country needs about 50 million USD each year toimplement such programmes to reach the goal.

From 1979 to March 2015, bombs and mines killed 19,710 and injured 44.797 others in Cambodia.-VNA
