Top officials of the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) and the opposition Cambodian National Rescue Party (CNRP) sat on August 10 for a two-hour closed meeting to discuss matter relating to the enforcement of law.
Representatives for the two parties were CPP Vice President Sar Kheng, who is also Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister, and Acting CNRP President and First Vice Chairman of the National Assembly of Cambodia Kem Sokha.
Their talks revolved around amendments to the law on management of non-governmental organisations, determining a national election date, and reviewing the recent arrest of some CNRP leaders.
According to Sok Setha, a senior CPP official, the two sides agreed to improve law enforcement based on their joint efforts and to hold the election in line with the national constitution.
The CNRP leaders’ arrest is within the court’s jurisdiction, hence, the party ought to settle the case in compliance with current legal procedures.
On July 22, 2014, the CPP and the CNRP reached consensus about ending the opposition’s ten-month boycott of the parliament following the 2013 election.-VNA
