Campaign against wildlife trafficking launched

An outdoor media campaign to raise awareness of wildlife trafficking was launched on April 28 by the Vietnamese government and the regional ASEAN Wildlife Enforcement Network (ASEAN-WEN).
An outdoor media campaign to raiseawareness of wildlife trafficking was launched on April 28 by theVietnamese government and the regional ASEAN Wildlife EnforcementNetwork (ASEAN-WEN).

Under the campaign, a large Vietnamese and English-language billboard onthe road to the Noi Bai International Airport in Ha Noi was put up toremind residents and visitors that "Wildlife Trafficking is Punishableby Law."

The billboard also provides telephone hotlines for reporting wildlifecrime. The sign features a photograph of a Tiger, an endangeredspecies often illegally traded throughout the region despite itspopulation in the wild dwindling to around 3,200 animals worldwide.

The campaign was a joint initiative of the ASEAN-WEN, Viet Nam ’sForest Protection Department, TRAFFIC, Education for Nature-Viet Nam(ENV) and FREELAND, and is supported by the U.S. Government through theU.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).

Similar events were also being held in Vientiane , Laos , andBangkok , Thailand./.
