City needs over 150 mln USD to become climate change resilient

Hau Giang (VNA) – Vi Thanh city inthe Mekong Delta province of Hau Giang is in need of over 3.3 trillion VND (150million USD) to build infrastructure to enhance its resistance against climatechange, said Nguyen Van Hoa, Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee.
Hoa made the statement at a working sessionwith a World Bank (WB) delegation on October 9.
As the administrative and economic centreof the province, Vi Thanh city has been seriously hit by flooding and salineintrusion as a result of climate change.
According to Vu Thi Phuong Linh, an WBurban development expert, apart from Vi Thanh, the WB is working withauthorities of six other Mekong Delta cities – Soc Trang, Bac Lieu, Tan An,Long Xuyen, and Vinh Long – to build and carry out a project on improving theregion’s climate-change resilience.
The project will support these localitiesin accessing their resilience capacity, providing short-term recommendationsand long-term planning for urban development, land use, traffic infrastructure,and water management.
Nguyen Huynh Duc, Director of the Hau GiangConstruction Department, said the province now has 18 urban planning projects,mostly focusing on traffic infrastructure.
Hau Giang aims to have a total of 20 urbanareas by 2030. However, increasing climate change impacts and limitedinvestment are hindering its urban development and livelihood improvement, hesaid.-VNA
Nearly 9,000 households with tens of thousands of people in the Mekong Delta province of Hau Giang are being affected by riverbank erosion and need to be relocated early to ensure their safety.
The Mekong Delta province of Hau Giang will cooperate with the Republic of Korea (RoK) in experimenting bio-products on rice at the province’s hi-tech agriculture zone.
Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has suggested the Mekong Delta province of Hau Giang develop smart agriculture and processing industry, and spread a new-style cooperative model.
