Cooperation between Vietnamese, French localities in spotlight

Paris (VNA) – The11th conference on cooperation between Vietnamese and Frenchlocalities was held in Paris on April 1 with a series of cooperation documentsand economic contracts signed between businesses of the two nations.

The conference is expectedto create a breakthrough, with the hope of becoming a model in reformingbilateral cooperation in all areas, from economy to culture and sustainabledevelopment, Jean-Claude Dardelet, Vice Mayor of Toulouse, said in his openingremarks.

The event highlighted bothopportunities and challenges facing localities of the two countries, he said.

Vietnamese Deputy Minister ofForeign Affairs Nguyen Quoc Cuong stressed the continuous development ofcooperation between Vietnamese and French localities in terms of both qualityand quantity over the past three decades.

The Vietnamese and French Governmentsshould create more optimal conditions for localities and businesses to sign andimplement more cooperation programmes effectively for benefits of both sides,Cuong suggested.

Geneviere Sevrin, director ofthe union of French cities (Cites Unies France –CUF), applaudedthe collaboration between Vietnamese and French cities and provinces, andefforts to turn the partnership into an important part of the relationshipbetween the two countries.

Accordingto Ambassador Christine Moro, who is in charge of international cooperation ofFrench localities, the conference brought together representatives from 26French localities and 34 Vietnamese localities, demonstrating the dynamism anddevelopment of this cooperation form.

Thepartnership between localities will be enhanced and expanded across spheresthrough specific project, bringing interests to both sides, the ambassadorsaid.

The two-dayconference touched upon national priorities, including bilateral commitments inthe context that Vietnam and the EU will sign a free trade agreement in thetime ahead.

More 600delegates will attend seminars on the pioneering role of localities in  education and health care, socio-economicaffairs and solidarity in bilateral affiliation in different spheres, rangingfrom urbanization to city sustainable development, global warming combat andclimate change adaptation.

The firstconference was held in Lille city, France in 1995. Hanoi will host the 12th conference in 2022.

Currently, 19French localities are implementing cooperation projects with 17 Vietnamesecounterparts, focusing on health care and education, French language teaching,culture, heritage, tourism, urban transport infrastructure, agricultural andrural development, science-technology, environment and clean water.-VNA
