COVID-19: Laos suspends visa granting for foreigners, closes schools

The Lao Government has suspended the issuance of visas for foreign tourists for 30 days and closed schools at all levels to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith announced on March 18.

Vientiane (VNA) – The Lao Government has suspended the issuance ofvisas for foreign tourists for 30 days and closed schools at all levels toprevent the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulithannounced on March 18.

All types of visas onarrival and electronic visas (E-visas) are suspended, he said after concludingthe first day of the monthly cabinet meeting for March.

Those already holdingan entry visa need to get a health certificate from the concerned authoritiesand declare their travel history.

The cabinettemporarily revokes visa exemptions previously applied to some countries.Therefore, those countries’ citizens need to come to the Lao embassy orconsulate applying for visas, he stated, adding that this measure will go onuntil further notice.

The PM said Lao peopletravelling from coronavirus-hit countries are required to impose self-quarantinefor 14 days. All entertainment venues including karaoke and massage venues mustbe closed.

Other businesses cancontinue operations and services with the operators employing necessaryprotective measures, including taking the temperature of customers andproviding alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

All state and privateeducational facilities from preschools to universities will be closed fromMarch 19 to April 21.

As of March 18, Laoshad recorded no COVID-19 case./.
