Hanoi (VNA) - The Philippines' Department ofHealth (DOH) on August 6 reported 10,623 new COVID-19 infections, bringing thetotal number of confirmed cases in the Southeast Asian country to 1,638,345.
The death toll climbed to 28,673 after 247 morepatients died of the viral disease, the DOH added.
The daily caseload and death toll are both the highestsince April.
Meanwhile, the rising new cases in Malaysia are due tonew variants such as Delta, a senior health official said.
"The decline in cases may take sometime but moreimportantly, we want to see a decrease in terms of serious patient admissionsinto wards and those who die,” said Hishamshah Mohd Ibrahim.
Ministry of Health (MoH) secretary-general Datuk MohdShafiq Abdullah, said: “This month, we expect the number of genome sequencingto increase as we have established a consortium of seven laboratories in theMinistry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) and at universities.

Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen has ordered intensifying COVID-19prevention and control measures.
The Royal Phnom Penh Hospital has been authorised bythe government to import and control the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna COVID-19vaccines from the United States.

Laos has increased the quarantine period for thoseentering Laos from 14 days to 28 days following cases of community spread bythose leaving quarantine.
Singapore will allow people to dine at eateries ingroups of up to five from August 10 if they are fully vaccinated, in the firststep of the country's roadmap towards reopening its economy.
Those who are not vaccinated but have valid negativepre-event test results will be allowed to join such groups of five, as well asthose who have recovered from COVID-19.
The cap on group sizes for social gatherings will beraised from two to five, and households will be able to receive up to fivedistinct visitors.
This easing of measures is possible because Singaporeexpects around 70 percent of its population to have received both vaccinedoses by National Day, said Health Minister Ong Ye Kung on August 6.
If the situation remains stable, permitted event sizesand capacity limits for malls and attractions will further increase nine dayslater, on August 19./.
