Cuban leader extends sympathy over losses in recent floods
First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba Central Committee Raul Castro Ruz has sent messages of sympathy to Vietnamese Party and State leaders over heavy losses in recent floods in the north.
Hanoi (VNA) – FirstSecretary of the Communist Party of Cuba Central Committee, President of theCouncil of State and the Council of Ministers of Cuba Raul Castro Ruz has sentmessages of sympathy to Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, PresidentTran Dai Quang and Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc over heavy losses in recentfloods in northern mountainous provinces.
The Cuban leader also expressedhis sympathy to families of victims and those affected by the natural disasters.
According to the Central SteeringCommittee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control, since the beginning ofAugust, heavy rains and subsequent flashfloods have claimed the lives of 34people and left 11 others missing.
The floods also swept away andcollapsed 231 houses, damaged 245 houses, submerged 338.5 hectares of rice, andmade 398 households leave their homes to safer places.
They also blew away over 25,000 cubic metres of nationalroads, 117,706 cubic metres of provincial and district roads; damaged 145irrigation works and 2,072 metres of river dike, causing about over 940 billionVND (41.36 million USD) in economic losses in the provinces.-VNA
The Vietnamese Embassy in Laos and other agencies of Vietnam in the country have raised a fund worth 2,300 USD in support of flood victims in the homeland.
Flash floods in Hoang Lien National Park on August 12 swept away three people aged 18-36 in Sa Pa district of the northern mountainous province of Lao Cai, a local official said.
Floods triggered by heavy rains on August 15 and 16 caused a nine-year-old girl to go missing and damaged roads and houses in the northern mountainous province of Dien Bien.

The Vietnam Red Cross (VRC) on August 23 received 50,000 USD donated by the Red Cross Society of China (IFRC) to support people in the northern mountainous region affected by recent torrential rains and floods.
The trip will be made at the invitations of Chinese Premier Li Qiang and WEF President and CEO Børge Brende, according to an announcement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
