Deputy Defence Minister holds virtual meeting with UN Under-Secretary General

Hanoi (VNA) - Lt. Gen. Nguyen Chi Vinh, Deputy Minister of National Defence, askedthe UN on July 10 to offer support to peacekeepers whose missions were extendeddue to COVID-19, including those from Vietnam, during a virtual meeting withAtul Khare, UN Under-Secretary General for Field Support.
Vinh highlightedVietnamese peacekeepers’ COVID-19 relief efforts in Africa,saying they have also helped local children study and taught local people aboutgood personal hygiene to prevent the transmission of the disease.
The force hasalso produced and given away face masks to international colleagues and localcitizens to fight the pandemic, he added.
The official said Vietnam is actively preparing for the third Level-2 field hospital toreplace the one in South Sudan.
Khare, for hispart, congratulated Vietnam on its success in containing the virus, saying healso appreciated the hospital’s contributions to the localcoronavirus response.
He said he expectsVietnam will ramp up such activities to further support the UN Mission in SouthSudan.
The UN officialsuggested the two sides take necessary steps to enhance the preparedness ofVietnamese military engineers, who received intensive training for the peacekeepingmission the African country.
The two officialslater discussed the organisation of a conference on women and UN peacekeepingmissions and a celebration of the 10th anniversary of the ASEAN DefenceMinisters’ Meeting Plus (ADMM+) initiated by Vietnam./.
Vietnamese forces engaging in UN peacekeeping missions in the Central African Republic and South Sudan reported on the COVID-19 situation in their areas via a video conference in Hanoi on June 15.
Ensuring safety for Vietnamese staff working at UN peacekeeping missions in South Sudan and the Central African Republic is the first and the most important task amid the complicated development of the COVID-19 pandemic in those two countries, according to Deputy Defence Minister Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh.
