Deputy PM highlights importance of hydrometeorology investment

Hanoi (VNA) – Deputy Prime Minister TranHong Ha on June 9 emphasised the significance of investment in hydrometeorologyto national stability and development, while chairing a working session of theassessment council of the national hydro-meteorological network planning schemefor 2021-2030 with a vision towards 2050.
The scheme is closely associated with the nationaleconomy, politics and national defence. Therefore, targets and tasks set in thescheme must come from requirements in the reality, he said.
The Deputy PM noted that international cooperationplays an important role in the collection and sharing of hydro-meteorologicaldata, adding the network forms part of the regional and global hydro-meteorologicalmonitoring systems.
He urged stepping up the application of digitaltransformation, artificial intelligence and big data in building, operating andusing hydro-meteorological data.
Ha also suggested orientations for hydro-meteorologicaldevelopment in agriculture, aviation and environment, enabling the sector toserve all aspects of the socio-economic life.

Regarding the implementation of the planning scheme,He said the State’s resources allocated to the hydro-meteorological sectorshould be effectively optimised.
According to the Vietnam Meteorological andHydrological Administration under the Ministry of Natural Resources andEnvironment, the scheme aims to develop a modern, harmonious national hydro-meteorologicalnetwork on par with developed countries in Asia by 2030.
The network will be able to integrate itself intothe global hydro-meteorological network, meeting the demand for data andinformation.
It is also expected to help raise the accuracy,timeliness and reliability of hydro-meteorological forecasting and warning, andnatural disaster prevention and control, the agency said.
During the 2021-2025, the network has been upgraded,modernised and expanded, especially in the areas prone to natural disastersand climate change. By 2050, the density of automatic hydro-meteorological stationsin Vietnam will be equivalent to that in developed countries worldwide./.
Hydrometeorology is a borderless issue, so to minimise natural disaster-related losses and risks, close cooperation among countries around the world is needed, head of the Vietnamese hydro-meteorological administration has said.
Improving the capacity of hydro-meteorological monitoring and forecasting as well as strengthening international cooperation are identified as two major tasks of the national hydro-meteorological sector in the future.
Applying artificial intelligence in the hydro-meteorological sector is essential, said Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Le Cong Thanh.
Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Le Cong Thanh has urged the hydro-meteorological sector to accelerate comprehensive digital transformation and research and application of new technologies to better natural disaster prevention and control, search and rescue activities, and minimise damage caused by hydro-meteorological disasters.
The programmes have brought about positive changes to rural infrastructure, comprehensively improved the material and spiritual lives of farmers, and contributed to Vietnam's economic restructuring, said PM Pham Minh Chinh.
The festival highlighted the contributions and robust development of Vietnam's revolutionary press over the past century while promoting press products and showcasing the creativity of Vietnamese journalists.
