Paris (VNA) – The Dien Bien Phu victory 65 years agois not only one for the Vietnamese but also for the French people against colonialism,a French sociologist has affirmed.
In a recent interview granted to Vietnam News Agencycorrespondents, Said Bouamama further asserted that the collapse of the Frenchmilitary complex was not a purely military defeat for France, but it tolled thebell of death for the French colonialist regime.
The immediate impact of Vietnam’s Dien Bien Phu victoryaccelerated profound subsequent changes, not only on colonialized countries butalso on the changes of French colonialist strategy, the scholar said, addingthat besides being a military feat for Vietnam, the victory also serves as a symboland a promise of independence for suppressed nations.
The victory came as a clear-cut distinction between thevictor and the loser, he said, describing this as quite worthy and undeniable forVietnam after its huge sacrifices during the war. The obvious loser was thethen French state and the ruling social strata it was protecting.
However, the French people had never supported the war, thescholar affirmed, pointing to the fact that the anti-war movement was very effervescentwith many activities all over France. This proves that the French people cannotbe taken as the loser of the Dien Bien Phu battle.
All the factors that smash the colonialist spirit in factare the victory of the French people, he said, concluding that the Dien Bien Phuvictory holds a great significance: a defeat to colonialism, racial discriminationand the French state and at the same time a victory of the Vietnamese andFrench nations.-VNA
Despite the 65 years that have passed, the memories of Colonel Jacques Allaire – a French veteran who fought in the Dien Bien Phu campaign – have remained intact.
Dien Bien province has carried out several activities to mark the 65th anniversary of Dien Bien Phu victory that ended the French colonial rule in Vietnam.
The Dien Bien Phu victory on May 7, 1954 was Vietnam’s biggest victory in the resistance war from 1945 to 1954. The victory manifested Vietnamese military intelligence.
An exhibition on the Dien Bien Phu campaign and victory is underway in Hanoi. The event is part of the activities to celebrate the 65th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu victory in 1954.
Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has highlighted the historical significance of the Dien Bien Phu victory on May 7, 1954, and outlined four key tasks to accomplish the goals set for national construction and defence 65 years after the world-breaking event.
The programme to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses has achieved notable results, with nearly 263,000 housing units addressed to date, including 225,000 houses inaugurated and 38,000 under construction. Thirty-eight provinces and cities across the nation have already fulfilled their targets.
Stronger efforts and determination are required to achieve and surpass the set targets, especially in the eradication of makeshift and dilapidated houses nationwide, the acceleration of public investment disbursement, and the implementation of nationally important transport projects, PM Pham Minh Chinh noted.
The trip will be made at the invitations of Chinese Premier Li Qiang and WEF President and CEO Børge Brende, according to an announcement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
