Education ministry calls for end to physical violence against children

Da Nang (VNA) – The Ministry of Education andTraining organised a launch ceremony in response to the global initiative toend physical violence against children at home and at school on November 24 inthe central city of Da Nang.

According to a report of the Ministry of Public Security,Vietnam records 3,000-4,000 cases of violence against children each year, inwhich around 100 children are killed and 1,000 others are sexually assaulted.

Besides, a survey of the General Statistics Office showsthat 74 percent of Vietnamese children aged 2-14 are punished by violence bytheir parents or other family members or baby-sisters, and 24 percent ofmarried women who have children aged under 15 admit that their husbands onceused violence against their children.

Deputy Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Thi Nghiasaid that the reason for the violence is that parents, child caregivers,teachers and children themselves lack basic knowledge on the enforcement ofchildren’s rights, including the right to be protected and the right to be safeof children.
