Brussels (VNA) – Two parliamentarians fromthe Party of European Socialists namely Eric Andrieu and Marc Tarabella haveannounced that they will request the establishment of a commission of inquiryon the US chemical group Monsanto.

The US agrochemical giant, which specialises inmanufacturing glyphosate - a broad-spectrum systemic herbicide (Roundup), hasbeen supervised by European parliamentarians for the past few weeks, after therelease of the Monsanto Files.

Earlier, in the middle of March, the US federalagencies released hundreds of Monsanto’s internal emails proving that thecompany should have known the toxic level of Roundup weed killer since 1999.

The parliamentarians, who are also members ofthe European Commission on Agriculture, have sent a letter to President of theEuropean Commission Jean Claude-Juncker, asking him not to renew the authorisationof glyphosate in the European Union.

They expressed their hope to establish aninspection commission on Monsanto and called for specific punishment againstthe US group.

Eric Andrieu said the establishment of such acommission will help expand the scope of investigation to other dangerousproducts.

The International Monsanto Tribunal has foundthat Monsanto is guilty of ecocide, which has left long-term consequences onthe ecosystem of various nations, including Vietnam.

The conclusion was delivered by fiveinternational judges in The Hague, the Netherlands, on April 18 after sixmonths of investigation and two days of testimony. 

Once being among producers of AgentOrange/dioxin for the US army during wartime in Vietnam, the biotech giant nowproduces pesticides and genetically modified plants.

The judges said Monsanto has engaged inpractices which have negatively impacted the human rights to a healthyenvironment, food and health.-VNA
