Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen on August 21 requested punitive measures be imposed on individuals and organisations who accused the Government of using a false map.
According to Spokesperson of the Cambodian Government and Secretary of State Phay Siphan, the Prime Minister’s decision, as made during a ministerial meeting, is intended to protect the law and public security in line with the national constitution.
Any actions that distort border issues are considered going against the law to deliberately provoke social unrest and create public misunderstanding of border issues.
The requirement came a day after Cambodia’s Coordinating Committee on Receiving and Checking Maps revealed the map used in determining the border with Vietnam is the same as the one preserved by the United Nations (UN) since 1964.
The map verification took place in front of representatives of the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP), the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP), the FUNCINPEC Party, the Senate and the National Assembly and the UN, as well as the media and others.
Previously, the CNRP accused the Cambodian Government of using a map incongruent to the one preserved by the UN. A number of the CNRP members organised demonstrations gathering thousands of people at common border areas and even caused violent conflicts at a border marker in Svay Rieng province of Cambodia on June 28.-VNA
