HCM City (VNA) -Vietnam's U20 football team were thrashed by Argentina U20 4-1 in a friendly inHo Chi Minh City on May 10. The match was a rehearsal forthe FIFA U20 World Cup in the Republic of Korea (RoK) between May and June 2017for both teams. With their outstandingindividuals whose skills are world class, the away side dominated the matchfrom kick-off. Vietnam set out their stallwith a disciplined defence and despite the near-constant pressure, managed someimpressive counter-attacks. However, a slip inconcentration from the Vietnamese defenders in the 28th minute, Argentineattacker Ezequiel Ponce received a pass from his teammate Marcelo Torres andopened the scoring. Though both teams hadopportunities to find the net, the first half ended 1-0. Argentina continued todominate after the break, with Ezequiel Mansilla doubling their advantage witha header in the early minutes of the second half, Torres again theprovider. The away side pulled away withanother two goals through Mendez Ignacio in the 62nd and 87th minutes; howeverVietnam refused to lie down and scored a late consolation through attacker HaDuc Chinh. Despite the heavy defeat theVietnamese side will be able to learn from the experience of competing againsta greatly superior opponent. Vietnam's squad will play onemore friendly against Vanuatu U20 on May 14 in the RoK, one week before theirU20 FIFA World Cup campaign begins against New Zealand in Group E. Argentina is a regular face atthe U20 World Cup, having won the competition six times, while this isVietnam's first appearance.
While Argentina hopes to comeaway as winner of the tournament, Vietnam has already made history as the firstever Southeast Asian team to compete at the tournament.

Nguyen Quang Hai’s perfect free kick helped Vietnam’s U20 team beat Fortuna 05 Dusseldorf’s U19 squad 4-1 in their last friendly match on April 26 in Germany.
Vietnam U20 coach Hoang Anh Tuan said the upcoming friendly match between his team and Argentina on May 10 will be final rehearsal for the FIFA U20 World Cup in the Republic of Korea between May and June 2017.
The Vietnam U20 football team is eagerly looking forward to its friendly match with their Argentinean counterparts, who have won the world U20 title six times, team captain Nguyen Quang Hai said.
The programme featured a range of activities, including group practice sessions of the Common Yoga Protocol (CYP), Vietnamese–Indian cultural performances, a commemorative flag handover ceremony for clubs, and a beach clean-up to help protect the marine environment.
This year’s tournament has gathered over 300 coaches, athletes, and referees from 18 countries and territories, competing in 28 combat weight categories and eight performance categories. Vietnam’s team has 50 athletes, including six from Thai Nguyen province.
It is the first time that the country is to hold a G1-level tournament which is expected to lure more than 100 athletes of 15 countries and regions at Go Vap Gymnasium.
Nguyen Trong Nha Uyen has made history for Vietnam’s dancesport by clinching a bronze medal in the solo Latin category at the WDSF World Championship 2025 in Germany.
The ambassador noted that among the 300,000 Vietnamese residing in the RoK, around 3,000 are living in Pyeongtaek and contributing actively to the local economy. Ho expressed his hope that the local authorities will continue support the overseas Vietnamese community in the city.

The exhibition showcases more than 100 valuable documents and artifacts, divided into two main parts: “Journalist Nguyen Ai Quoc – Ho Chi Minh” and “President Ho Chi Minh – Founder and Mentor of Vietnamese Revolutionary Press.” This is an opportunity to recall the late leader’s journalism journey and affirm his exceptional role in founding and guiding the revolutionary press in Vietnam.
For the first time, the World DanceSport Federation (WDSF) has granted Vietnam hosting rights for the two championships, including the Asian women’s solo category, which debuts this year as an officially recognised event.
Eight teams will join the tournament, divided into two groups. Group A features Vietnam, the Philippines, Sichuan Club (China), and Australia, while Group B consists of Vietnam U21, Korabelka Club (Russia), Taiwan (China), and U21 Thailand.
Despite strong home support and high expectations, Vietnam were unable to overcome the defending champions, who secured their third consecutive win over Vietnam in a regional final, following previous victories in 2014 and 2023.
The event, part of Vietnam’s cultural diplomacy strategy through 2030, was jointly organised by the Vietnamese Embassy in Venezuela and USM’s Faculty of International Relations. It attracted thousands of students from universities across Venezuela.
