Foreign minister attends Non-Aligned Movement ministerial meeting

Hanoi (VNA) -Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son attended the virtual Ministerial Meeting of theNon-Aligned Movement (NAM) held on July 13 under the chair of Azerbaijan, thecurrent chair of the NAM.

In his remarks, FM Son affirmed that the solidarity spiritand principles of the NAM are the source of strength for the movement to rideover current difficulties and challenges.

The Vietnamese representative said the NAM shouldcontinue to play an important role in advocating multilateralism, and promotingcooperation at both regional and global scales, particularly efforts forpost-pandemic recovery, to realise the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) andcope with climate change.

As an active member of the NAM and a non-permanent member of the UN Security Councilin the 2020-2021 term, Vietnam upholds the core principles of the NAM,including respect for countries’ independence, sovereignty and territorialintegrity, peaceful settlement of international disputes, especially in effortsto maintain peace and maritime security and safety in the East Sea based oninternational law and the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.

At the conference, participants highlighted the contributionsof the NAM over the past 60 years to the struggle to safeguard internationalpeace and security, which provides strong encouragement to struggles for nationalliberation and independence protection in the world.

They shared the view that the NAM is a considerableforce in the struggle for a new international economic order.

In the current context, participants also shared theconcern about challenges to peace, security and development in the world, thecompetition among big powers, as well as the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.They reiterated the commitment to advocating compliance to the basic principlesof the UN Charter and international law.

On the occasion, the meetingapproved the granting of the NAM observer status to Russia./.
