Further strict supervision requested for Formosa’s waste
The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources has asked four central provinces to maintain strict supervision on waste discharges from the Hung Nghiep Formosa Ha Tinh Steel Limited Company.

Hanoi (VNA) – The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources onJuly 13 asked the People’s Committees of Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri andThua Thien-Hue to maintain strict supervision on waste discharges from the HungNghiep Formosa Ha Tinh Steel Limited Company.
Theministry also requested the localities to strictly follow the rules onsubmitting regular monitoring reports on the sea environment.
The evaluation of the marine environment in the four central localities oneyear after the Formosa-related marine environment incident showed that seawaterand sediment off the four provinces are now safe for swimming, water sports andaquaculture, the ministry said on July 13.
Notably, the indices on toxic substances such as phenol and iron hydroxide arenow within permissible limits.
Mass fish deathswere first reported on April 6, 2016 when many fish washed ashore in Ha Tinhprovince. The incident also occurred in Quang Binh, Quang Tri and Thua ThienHue provinces.
Wastewater discharged from Formosa polluted more than 200 kilometres ofcoastline, devastating the marine environment and local economies of thoseprovinces, which largely rely on fishing and tourism.
In June last year, Formosa accepted responsibility for the incident and pledged500 million USD in compensation for affected fishermen, households andorganisations.-VNA
Deputy Prime Minister Truong Hoa Binh has urged four localities affected by marine environmental incident last year to accelerate the disbursement of compensation and complete the process by June 30.
The total output of aquaculture and fishing of the central province of Thua Thien-Hue reached 17,736 tonnes in the last five months, a year-on-year increase of 15.43 percent.
The central province of Thua Thien – Hue is exerting every effort to complete compensation for locals affected by the marine environment incident last year, according to an official of the provincial People’s Committee.
Vietnam’s export turnover of aquatic products was estimated at 653 million USD in June, raising the total figure in the first half of this year to 3.5 billion USD, up 14.1 percent year-on-year.
The central province of Thua Thien-Hue has seen recovery and development of the fishery sector after more than one year of the maritime environment incident.
Compensation for residents affected by last year’s marine environmental incident in the four central provinces of Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri and Thua Thien-Hue has been mostly completed.
