Gia Lai province preserves archaeological sites

With over 20 archaeological sites, An Khe township in the Central Highlands province of Gia Lai is drawing much attention from scientists and local authorities have made efforts to preserve and uphold the values of these sites.

Gia Lai (VNA) –
With over 20archaeological sites, An Khe township in the Central Highlands province of GiaLai is drawing much attention from scientists and local authorities have madeefforts to preserve and uphold the values of these sites.

In 2014, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen KhacSu, a senior expert of the Vietnam Institute of Archaeology, along withresearcher Phan Thanh Toan, made a fact-finding tour to An Khe valley in GiaLai province.

The archaeologists discovered the abnormality frombig pebbles that were found unnaturally broken in an ancient river, possiblybeing the tools of human in the early Stone Age.

A meeting was quickly convened afterwards. TheVietnam Institute of Archaeology conducted a ministerial-level research projectin the year to expand the study and invited scientists from the NovosibirskInstitute of Archaeology and Ethnography under the Russian Academy of Sciencesto join the project.

As a result, from 2014 to present, Vietnameseand Russian archaeologists uncovered 23 relic sites dating back about 800,000years ago in An Khe hillock area, including 12 in Roc Tung (Xuan An commune),Go Da (An Binh ward), Roc Huong (An Tan ward), Roc Giao (Ngo May ward), Roc Lon(An Phuoc ward), Roc Nep (Cuu An commune), and Nui Dat (Cuu An commune).

The second international workshop on the StoneAge is scheduled to be held in An Khe on March 29-30. It aims to seek therecognition of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism for Tay Son ThuongDao relic site and archaeological sites in An Khe as special national ones.

Secretary of the An Khe Party Committee NguyenThi Thanh Lich said local authorities will continue calling for socialinvestment to preserve and promote the values of the archaeological sites.-VNA
