GMS-6, CLV-10 begins in Hanoi with senior official meetings

Hanoi (VNA) – Senior official meetings of the sixth Greater MekongSub-region (GMS-6) and the 10th Cambodia-Laos-Vietnam Development TriangleSummit (CLV-10) are scheduled to open in Hanoi on March 29.
The GMS-6 and CLV-10 taking place on March 29-31 are among the biggestmultilateral events hosted by Vietnam this year.
About 2,000 delegates are expected to attend the events, including GMS leaders,and representatives from international organisations such as the President ofthe Asian Development Bank (ADB), the Director General of the World Bank (WB),ASEAN Secretary General and representatives of the Asian InfrastructureInvestment Bank (AIIB) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA),among others.
Vietnam hosting the two events continues to affirm the country’s increasing position,as well as its role and contributions to regional cooperation mechanisms. Thisis an opportunity for regional leaders to discuss issues of shared concern on boostinginvestment cooperation, trade, ensuring security and using Mekong River watersustainably. It is also a chance for Vietnam to increase cooperation and connectivity,serving the country’s socio-economic development.
♋ The sixth Greater Mekong Sub-region Summit, themed “Leveraging 25 years ofcooperation, Building an integrated, sustainable and prosperous GMS aims tocelebrate the 25th founding anniversary of the GMS Programme and definecooperation orientations to build a region of prosperity, integration andsustainable development.
GMSwas established in 1992 as an initiative of the Asian Development Bank (ADB).The GMS Programme is the most complete cooperation programme that involvesVietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar, and China’s Yunnan and Guangxiprovinces. Priority fields include infrastructure development, energy,telecommunications, tourism, trade-investment, human resources, and theenvironment.
Meanwhile,the CLV-10 aims to review the implementation of the Master Plan forSocio-Economic Development of the CLV Development Triangle Area for 2010-2020and discuss cooperation orientations in the coming time, especially seeking toincrease the trilateral economic connectivity.
♉ TheCLV Development Triangle Area was established in 1999, covering Vietnam’s KonTum, Gia Lai, Dak Lak, Dak Nong provinces; Laos’ Sekong, Attapeu and Saravanprovinces; and Cambodia’s Stung Treng, Rattanak Kiri, and Mondul Kiri. In 2009,the three countries agreed to add Vietnam’s Binh Phuoc province, Cambodia’sKratie province, and Laos’ Champasak province to the area. Its cooperationfocuses on the fields of security, external affairs, transport, industry,agriculture, trade, investment and environmental protection.-VNA
Vietnam will organize the sixth Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS-6) Summit and the 10th Cambodia-Laos-Vietnam (CLV-10) Development Triangle Summit in Hanoi from March 29-31.
Vietnam has actively taken part in developing initiatives for enhanced cooperation within the GMS to boost economic growth, strengthen economic connectivity and aid poverty reduction effort in the region.

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc chaired a rehearsal of activities of the sixth Greater Mekong Sub-region Summit (GMS-6) and the 10th Cambodia-Laos-Vietnam Development Triangle Summit (CLV-10) in Hanoi on March 27.
Stronger efforts and determination are required to achieve and surpass the set targets, especially in the eradication of makeshift and dilapidated houses nationwide, the acceleration of public investment disbursement, and the implementation of nationally important transport projects, PM Pham Minh Chinh noted.
The trip will be made at the invitations of Chinese Premier Li Qiang and WEF President and CEO Børge Brende, according to an announcement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In particular, in April 2023, the two sides successfully carried out a joint operation that dismantled a major organised, transnational drug trafficking ring involving both Vietnamese and Cambodian suspects.
