Hau Giang province targets agrotourism development

The Mekong Delta province of Hau Giang plans to focus on sustainable agricultural tourism as part of its effort to lure tourists to the Mekong Delta region.

Hau Giang (VNS/VNA) – The MekongDelta province of Hau Giang plans to focus on sustainable agriculturaltourism as part of its effort to lure more tourists.

Speaking at a conference held thisweek in the province, Le Tien Chau, Chairman of theprovincial People’s Committee, said the tourism sector played a vitalrole in the region's socio-economic development.

Over the past five years, theprovince has developed key projects related to tourism infrastructureand products, and has strengthened linkages with travel firms inother provinces. It has also enhanced tourism promotional activities.

However, the region's potential foragrotourism has yet to be realised.

Nguyen Thi Ly, Deputy Director ofthe provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said that agrotourismhas helped reduce poverty and raise incomes of households in the province.

It has also contributed tocultural exchanges and raised awareness about environmentalprotection.

More and more travellerslike to visit the countryside to enjoy peaceful scenery andsample fresh fruits and local specialties.

The province has special products suchas Nam Roi grapefruit, Nga Bay orange, LongTri mandarin orange and Cau Duc pineapple.

The province has also developed manytourist attractions and community-based tourism sites, she said.

However, a lack of professionalskills in tourism services and unstable, small-scale tourism products areamong the major challenges for agrotourism development, Ly said.

Underdeveloped tourist attractionsand traffic infrastructure have also hindered tourism development, shesaid.

Le Minh Hoan, Secretary of the PartyCommittee of Dong Thap province, said: “Agrotourism should be developed incombination with community tourism. Local authorities should work withfarmers to develop agrotourism. They need to fully understand tourismresources in the province and encourage farmers to ultilise theresources.” 

Phan Dinh Hue, Director of the VietCircle Tourism Service Company, said the province should provide tourists withunique experiences in agricultural activities and community-based tourismproducts such as fishing, visits to fruit gardens and homestays.

Travel officials and householdsshould also receive training to improve their professional skills intourism services, Hue said.-VNS/VNA
