HCM City launches month for the poor

 The Vietnam Fatherland Front in Ho ChiMinh City on October 8 launched the month for the poor that will last fromOctober 17 to November 18.

The campaign targets poorand near-poor households, and those affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, contributingto completing the Government’s target of containing the epidemic and spurringsocio-economic development.

In the month, the city expectsto raise nearly 137 billion VND (5.9 million USD) in support of the poor,especially during the Lunar New Year (Tet) holiday.

According to To Thi BichChau, President of the Vietnam Fatherland Front in HCM City, over the past twodecades, more than 2.32 trillion VND has been mobilised for the poor, helpingto build over 30,200 houses and repair 7,325 others.

The city has alsopresented 500,000 scholarships to local students, and millions of gift packagesto social policy beneficiaries, poor and near-poor households, and those indifficult circumstances.

These results havecontributed to implementing the national target programmes on sustainablepoverty reduction and new-style rural area building, she said.

On October 6, the People’s Committee of Hanoi also launched the Month for the Poor and Social Welfarein 2020 at a ceremony held at the Hanoi Opera./.
