HCM City leader receives Japanese parliamentarians

HCM City (VNA) –ꦐ Ho Chi Minh City and Japan hold great cooperation potential inareas of mutual concern, including experience sharing in flood prevention andstartups, said Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party CommitteeNguyen Thien Nhan on July 26.
The municipal official made the statement while receiving a delegation of Japaneseparliamentarians led by Ryu Shionoya, President of the Japan-MekongParliamentary Friendship Association. At themeeting, Nhan noted that many visits by high-ranking officials have beenexchanged recently, contributing to the Vietnam-Japan Strategic Partnership. He tookthe occasion to extend his sympathies to his guest for the losses caused byrecent natural disasters in Japan, saying that Vietnam and Japan share manysimilarities, both in terms of culture and impact of climate change. In additionto education and training, human resources development in nursing also has roomfor cooperation. The two sides should foster collaboration in foreign languageand technical training, as well as promotion programmes for labourers, Nhanadded. In response,Ryu Shionoya said that this visit by Japanese parliamentarians to Vietnam aimedto enhance multifaceted cooperation with Vietnam and other countries in theMekong region. He saidthat Japan highly values Vietnam’s potential and role in the Mekong region andASEAN, and wishes to tighten its friendship with Vietnam, contributing toregional stability and socio-economic development. Laudingthe active development of HCM City, the guest vowed that he will furtherpromote cooperation programmes between the city and Japan, especially in trade,investment, education, and training. At themeeting, the municipal Secretary and the Japanese parliamentarians discussedthe important role of female parliamentarians, healthcare, education and training,and human resources quality and improvement, among others. Japan iscurrently the third biggest trade partner and the largest foreign investor ofHCM City, with about 1,000 projects totalling 4 billion USD. The city has setup relations with seven localities of Japan and organised numerous cooperationactivities with the country.-VNA
Ho Chi Minh City and Japan’s Kagoshima prefecture boast huge cooperation potential in tourism, food processing and high-tech agricultural production, said Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee Nguyen Thanh Phong.
Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Council Nguyen Thi Quyet Tam said HCM City and Japan’s Fukuoka prefecture can cooperate successfully as the two localities share a lot of similarities.
Japan poured 6.88 billion USD, 30 percent of the total foreign direct investment (FDI), into Vietnam in the first seven months of 2018, the biggest figure among 96 countries and territories investing here.
Stronger efforts and determination are required to achieve and surpass the set targets, especially in the eradication of makeshift and dilapidated houses nationwide, the acceleration of public investment disbursement, and the implementation of nationally important transport projects, PM Pham Minh Chinh noted.

In particular, in April 2023, the two sides successfully carried out a joint operation that dismantled a major organised, transnational drug trafficking ring involving both Vietnamese and Cambodian suspects.
