HCM City (VNA) - The southern largest economic hub of Ho Chi Minh Cityhas upgraded its water supply network using advanced technologies in operation, exploitation and supply of clean water.

Reducing water waste is one of the measures tosave costs since wastage amounts to 16 percent in HCM City and 22 percent in Hanoi.

Bui Thanh Khuyen, member of the management boardof the Thu Duc Water Supply Joint Stock Company (Wasuco), said the daily waterconsumption in HCM City amounts to over 1.8 million cubic metres.

Khuyen said financial problems are causingdifficulties in supplying water even as demand for water for household andcommercial use is on the rise.

Residents in suburban areas bordering Long An provinceface shortages, while 5,000 to 7,000 households in the suburban district of BinhChanh are demanding clean water for daily use, he said.

This year Wasuco will continue with its plans toexpand its supplying network and to reduce water losses in its pipelines.

It has begun to use information technology tomanage customer service, water supply and human resource training anddevelopment.

Its subsidiary companies have begun to adoptadvanced technologies in their operation. Rynan Technologies Vietnam and Thu DucWaseco JSC have signed a pilot project for a smart water supply network in ThuDuc district. Under the pilot project, locally made smart water meters will beinstalled in 90 percent of the households it covers.

According to Wasuco, the smart water supplynetwork will help prevent dripping and thus reduce losses (due to operation, maintenance and repair of the networks).

It will also help customers adjust their dailyuse of water, make water available to more people and increase the profits ofwater supply companies. But smart water supply networks cost three to fivetimes traditional networks do.

Nguyen Thanh My, CEO of Rynan TechnologiesVietnam JSC, said a smart water meter made by his firm costs more than 2million VND, a high price for many customers. But it could help Wasuco improvethe quality of water supply, he added.-VNA
