Hanoi (VNA) - A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck off the coastof East Nusa Tenggara province of Indonesia on August 28, according to the USGeological Survey (USGS).

The quake struck at a shallow depth of eight kilometres, about 100kilometres southeast of Kupang – the capital city of East Nusa Tenggaraprovince. But, there was no tsunami warning or immediate reports of damage.

Indonesia, one of the most disaster-prone nations on earth, straddlesthe so-called Pacific "Ring of Fire", where tectonic plates collideand many of the world's volcanic eruptions and earthquakes occur.

A number of deadly earthquakes rocked Indonesia's Lombok island recently,killing at least 555 people.

In 2004, a tsunami triggered by a 9.3-magnitude undersea earthquake offthe coast of Sumatra in western Indonesia killed 220,000 people in countriesaround the Indian Ocean, including 168,000 in Indonesia.-VNA
