Jakarta (VNA) - Indonesian authorities announced on September 23that the country had approved a giant solar power link between Australia andSingapore after a 2.5 billion USD investment commitment.

Specifically, the country has agreed to allow Sun Cable'sAustralia-Asia PowerLink or AAPowerLink route through Indonesian waters andapproved the undersea survey permit.

Addressing a virtual press conference in Jakarta, IndonesianCoordinating Minister of Maritime and Investment Luhut Binsar Panjaitan saidthis project is expected to have a sustainable impact on the country’s economythrough various procurement programmes that will benefit the industry and thegovernment's revenue.

AAPowerlink will generate solar electricity from one of theworld's biggest solar farm projects and transmit it from Darwin to Singaporestarting in 2028.

The project is expected to supply up to 15 percent ofSingapore's electricity needs and reduce the country's emissions by around 6 million tonnes annually.

The company will not be supplying renewable energy directlyto Indonesia but promised around 1 billion USD in direct investments onprocurement of equipment and services and an additional 1.5 billion USD inoperational spending over the life of the project./.
