Indonesia boosts ventilator production to curb COVID-19

Hanoi (VNA) – Indonesian Industry Minister AgusGumiwang Kartasasmita has said the ministry had coordinated with four majorlocal producers to develop ventilators to meet skyrocketing demand due to theCOVID-19 pandemic.

Four producers include those from the University ofIndonesia (UI); Yogya’s Gajah Mada University (UGM) in Yogykarta which iscollaborating with PT Yogya Presisi Tehnikatama Industry and PT. StechoqRobotika; Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB); and Surabaya Institute ofTechnology (ITS).

The ministry will help these producers gain access to necessarymaterials and components for quick production of standardised ventilators, Agussaid, adding that most of the producers are developing low-cost ventilators andwill begin production this month.

After the pandemic is brought under control, Indonesia willprioritise development of pharmaceutical and medical equipment sectors to meetdomestic demand and reduce dependence on imports.

The Industry Ministry is also encouraging the production ofherbal ingredients to add value for local medicine manufacturing as the countryis well-known for its rich variety of herbs.

As of April 22, Indonesia had confirmed 7,418 cases ofCOVID-19 infection, with 635 deaths and 913 recoveries./.
