Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla urged ASEAN member states to step up security collaboration to prevent rampant piracy in theStrait of Malacca, one of the world’s most bustling maritime routes. The Vice President’s appeal came after the hijacking of a Singaporean-flag ship in the strait last week.
Joint patrol is billed as an effective measure to foil the pirates’ escape, Jusuf Kalla underscored, recommending that countries further collaboration in territorial waters to prevent the movement of the hijackers from one country to another country.
Singaporean registered MT Joaquim, sailing from Indonesia’s Tanjung Pinang to Malaysia’s Pulau Langkawi, went missing on August 8. One day later, it was found some 22 kilometres from Rupit island of Indonesia’s South Sumatra province. All of the 3,500 tonnes of fuels on the ship were stolen.-VNA
