Indonesia calls on Japan to invest in hydropower projects

Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan has called on Japan to invest in building hydropower plants in a green industrial area in North Kalimantan, Antara News Agency reported.
Jakarta (VNA) – Indonesia’s CoordinatingMinister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan has calledon Japan to invest in building hydropower plants in a green industrial area inNorth Kalimantan, Antara News Agency reported.

The offer was made after his meeting with the JapaneseMinister of Economy, Trade, and Industry Hagiuda Koichi on January 11.

Last December, Indonesian President Jokowi inaugurated thegroundbreaking of a 30-hectare green industrial park, which has the potentialto generate up to 11,000 megawatts of electricity, said Luhut in a writtenstatement.

Apart from investing in the energy sector, Indonesia andJapan have agreed to expand ties in the fisheries, environment, andpetrochemical industries during the meeting.

Luhut also explained that the development in Indonesia,especially the downstream industry, would depend on investment that putsforward the concept of sustainability. On the other hand, the industry wasencouraged to reduce dependence on raw commodities in order to increase addedvalue.

He suggested that the two countries plan regular technicaldiscussions so that they could intensively discuss points of cooperation.Minister Koichi, meanwhile, said Japan was also interested in furthercooperating with Indonesia./.
