Indonesia is drafting a regulation enabling media outlets to receive payments from digital platforms or aggregators that carry their content, the country’s Press Council has said.

The new law is expected to beissued as a presidential regulation within a month.
According to Arif Zulkifli, a member of the council, these platforms benefitfrom carrying content generated by media companies while most media firms receivesmall profits. This is unfair, he said, addingthat the new law is expected to level the playing field between media and techfirms in terms of providing content and generating profit.

The law, proposed two yearsago, is inspired by similar laws in Germany and Australia. Since then, more than 30 agreements have been signed between technologycompanies and media outlets, paying for content that generated clicks andadvertising dollars, according to a report by the country's Treasury./.
