Indonesia can emerge as a key player in the global shrimp market with the government's support for boosting exports and production, said Marine Affairs and Fisheries Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono on June 14.
Jakarta (VNA) - Indonesia can emerge as a keyplayer in the global shrimp market with the government's support for boostingexports and production, said Marine Affairs and Fisheries Minister Sakti WahyuTrenggono on June 14.

In a statement issued on the day, the minister noted that, for2015-2019, shrimp obtained the second highest demand in the global market, onlyafter salmon.

Indonesia's shrimp output contributed 6.9 percent to theglobal supply during the period, he pointed out. The country was thefifth-largest shrimp exporter worldwide in 2019 after India, Ecuador, Vietnam,and China. 

The ministry has prepared some programmes to boostproduction and exports of shrimp through the revitalisation of ponds byconducting infrastructure development and simplification of licensing forshrimp businesses, among others.

Moreover, it has developed the shrimp estate model forfarmers to conduct cultivation in an integrated area through a technology-basedproduction process and an environment-friendly approach./.
