Indonesia eyes to become world’s second biggest coffee producer
Indonesia is currently behind Brazil, Vietnam, and Colombia in global coffee production. Vietnam, the second-largest producer, produces 1.8 million tonnes of coffee annually.
Jakarta (VNA) - Indonesia is focusing on increasing domestic coffee production, with the goal of overtaking Vietnam as the world’s second-largest coffee producer, according to Coordinating Minister for Food Zulkifli Hasan.
With annual coffee production exceeding 700,000 tonnes, it currently ranks fourth globally, Zulkifli Hasan said, believing this figure can grow significantly with the right strategies in place.
He shared that the strategy to increase productivity includes using better quality seedlings, improving post-harvest processing, and adopting more competitive packaging to increase the value of Indonesian coffee.
According to the minister, Indonesia has vast areas of land suitable for coffee cultivation, and currently has 54 Geographical Indications (GI) for coffee, comprising 26 for Arabica, 24 for Robusta, three for Liberica, and one for Excelsa.

Hasan called for stronger cooperation between the government and the private sector to unlock Indonesia's full coffee potential.
According to the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) data, Indonesia exported 342,220 tonnes of coffee worth 1.49 billion USD from January to September 2024. Meanwhile, the country imported 67,650 tonnes of coffee valued at 319.84 million USD. The top export destinations of Indonesian coffee include the Philippines, the US, and Malaysia./.
With proactive business measures, market expansion policies, and improved product quality, Vietnam's coffee industry is still expected to achieve export turnover of around 7 billion USD in 2025.
Gia Lai is a key region for Vietnamese coffee, with more than 100,000 hectares under cultivation. Over 57,000 hectares are certified under 4C, UTZ, Rainforest, and Organic standards. Moving beyond quantity, Gia Lai's coffee industry is now aiming to conquer global markets with specialty products, particularly Fine Robusta. This effort to enhance value and build a strong brand for Vietnamese coffee is the result of collaboration between businesses, farmers adopting new mindsets, and supportive local government policies.
The Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association estimates that coffee exports could reach 2.8 billion US dollars in Q1 2025. If prices remain stable, annual exports may hit a record 8 billion US dollars.
Thai Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce Vuttikrai Leewiraphan Thailand's formal proposal will be substantial enough for the US to consider further detailed negotiations.
