Hanoi (VNA) - 🍬An Indonesian court on April 24 handed down a 15-year-jail sentence toformer Speaker of Parliament Setya Novanto over corruption charges.

Novanto played akey role in the embezzlement case related to the electronic identity card(e-ID) project worth 5.9 trillion rupiah (some 424 million USD), presidingjudge Yanto said. The graft casecaused 2.3 trillion rupiah (172.8 million USD) in financial losses to the statebudget, according to the court. The court hasimposed 15 years jail term, adding that Novanto is obligated to pay a fine of500 million rupiah (about 36,000 USD). He is also banned to hold public officefor five years after serving his sentence. Novanto saidthat he would consider whether to file an appeal. Some otherpoliticians, government officials and businessmen also face allegationsrelating to the corruption case.-VNA
