Jakarta (VNA) – Indonesia on January 20 launched its first international carbon trading platform, contributing to promoting the country’s climate and sustainable development goals.

According to Indonesian Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, international carbon trading is conducted via the Indonesian Carbon Exchange (IDXCarbon).

He also noted that this initiative is part of Indonesia's commitment to the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. Carbon trading is not only a market mechanism, but also a bridge between economic growth and environmental management.

A carbon trading system will promote innovation and sustainable development, and create a foundation for international cooperation towards a low-carbon future, Hanif added.

ꦰ According to Indonesian authorities, there are 1.735 million tonnes of carbon dioxide available for trading. This is the cumulative emission reduction from a number of strategic energy projects across the country./.
