Indonesia: Over 34,000 people flee due to volcano in Bali

More than 34,000 people have evacuated from the eastern part of Indonesia’s resort island of Bali after tremors caused by Agung volcano increased, indicating that the volcano may erupt for the first time in more than 50 years.

Hanoi (VNA) – More than 34,000 peoplehave evacuated from the eastern part of Indonesia’s resort island of Bali aftertremors caused by Agung volcano increased, indicating that the volcano mayerupt for the first time in more than 50 years.

The Indonesian natural disaster management agency saidthe number of displaced people is expected to rise, although the figure hasincreased three times since the evacuation warning was issued on September 22.

The international airport in Bali’s capital Denpasar isstill operating as normal while preparing for temporary closure. Buses andtrains are also ready to carry passengers to airports in other provinces incase of eruption.

The Volcanology andGeological Disaster Mitigation Agency of Indonesia on September 22 raised the alertstatus of Agung volcano to Level 4, the highest level. Local authoritiesaffirmed that the island is safe, however, visitors are advised to keep awayfrom places near the volcano.

The volcano has yet to erupt though tremorsbecame more intense on September 24. The most recent eruption of Agung in 1963claimed more than 1,000 lives -VNA
