Indonesia has overtaken Japan to become the world's third-biggest aviation market as airlines continue to reduce passenger capacity because of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to OAG Aviation Worldwide.

Jakarta (VNA) – Indonesia has overtaken Japan to become the world'sthird-biggest aviation market as airlines continue to reduce passenger capacitybecause of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to OAG Aviation Worldwide.

The country's scheduled capacity is now 2.1 million seats, down 7.8 percentfrom last week, while Japan’s dropped nearly 15 percent.

Chinese capacity rose 7.2 percent to 8.7 million seats, making it the biggestmarket. The US has fallen nearly 27 percent to 8.2 million this week, data fromOAG show.

OGA said a resilient domestic market has helpedshield Indonesia to a degree, though its capacity is still down 33 percent fromJanuary’s third week.

Virus containment efforts are being stepped up in the country amid warningsthat infections could climb to 95,000 by the end of next month from about 4,500now.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo lastweek banned government employees from travelling during Ramadan and urged thepublic to avoid taking trips at the peak travel time in the world's fourth-mostpopulous nation./.
