Indonesia pinpoints location of sunken ferry

Hanoi (VNA) - Indonesianauthorities said on June 25 that they have pinpointed the location of vessel KMSinar Bangun that sank a week ago in Lake Toba, one of the world’s deepest lakes.

In a television interview, headof the national search and rescue agency Muhammad Syaugi said Indonesia needsassistance from the international community to recover the wreckage.

A day earlier, the agency said ithas found an object like the ship at a depth of 490m.

The vessel sank on June 18 as itsailed from Samosir, a volcanic island in the middle of Lake Toba to Parapattown. Three died in the accident while 193 are missing, including children.Only 18 passengers were rescued.

The search and rescue effortshave involved about 400 people as the lake has a surface area of nearly 1,145sq.km and depth up to 500m.

The accident is said to be one ofthe worst waterway tragedies in Indonesia, where ferry accidents are common asthe country is an archipelago of more than 17,000 islands.-VNA
