The Indonesian police have gunned down 11 suspected criminals in an operation to free the capital, Jakarta, of street crime before the Asian Games 2018 slated for next month.
Jakarta (VNA) — The Indonesian police have gunneddown 11 suspected criminals in an operation to free the capital, Jakarta, ofstreet crime before the Asian Games 2018 slated for next month.

Fifty-two were shot for resisting the arrest and 11 of them died, JakartaPolice Spokesman Prabowo Argo Yuwono said.

Nearly 2,000 people have been arrested since the operation began from earlythis month, he added.

The two-month operation against thieves, thugs and otherstreet criminals aims to boost security for the Asian Games, which will takeplace in Jakarta, Palembang and West Java from August 18 to September 2.

Security is the top priority at the event following recent suicidebombings in Indonesia's second-largest city, Surabaya, that killed 26 people,including 13 attackers.

Some 11,000 athletes from 45 countries and territories andseveral thousand journalists and officials are expected to participate in the upcomingAsian Games.

As planned, about 100,000 security officers will be deployedacross the three venues throughout the sport event.-VNA
