Indonesia raises alert level of volcano in Bali to highest

Jakarta (VNA) – The Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Agency ofIndonesia on September 22 raised alert status of Agung volcano in Bali resort islandto Level 4, the highest level.

Localauthorities said the alert was based on recent activities of the volcano. Withthe new alert, evacuation zone was extended to 12km from the crater for areasin the north, northeast, southeast, south and southwest.

Allresidents in those areas have to evacuate since morning of September 23 and alltravel and public activities are canceled.

SutopoPurwo Nugroho, Head of Data, Information and Public Relation of IndonesianNational Board for Disaster Management, said that a national steering centrewill be established to manage all activities coping with risks of the volcaniceruption. Equipment will be promptly transferred to evacuation centres andrelevant agencies will apply appropriate measures. Localauthorities also called on people to stay calm and follow guidance of relevantagencies to avoid damage caused by the volcano.

Nearly10,000 villagers have escaped the no-go zone in 50 locations of three districtsas volcanic and tectonic tremors became more intensified in the past few days.-VNA
